Data Decision Tree
Methods
Data Collection Phase
To start this project, we had to get a feel for what it is that LeCroy and Milligan did and what they were looking for from us. This required us to meet LeCroy & Milligan staff to get insight into not only their needs but also how their business operates. We collected preliminary information on what type of research they conduct, the types of data they work with and what type of work they do. This information pushed us into our next phase of work which was to conduct technical research into the concepts LeCroy & Milligan presented to us.
Sample Questions from first meeting:
Who do you work with?
What types of data do you collect, and how do you collect it?
What are you looking for from us at the end of this project?
Research & Interview Phase
The research we conducted consisted of academic and industry publications and guidelines for qualitative data collection, relational databases, cloud storage, and metadata/project management softwares. We wanted to build a foundational knowledge of these concepts before we went back to LeCroy & Milligan to interview their staff. These interviews took place virtually over several meetings with different staff members in different positions at LeCroy & Milligan. These interviews were more than just a baseline knowledge of what LeCroy & Milligan does as a company, but we tried to conceptualize their specific workflows. The idea behind this was to get an understanding of where we can help them, their biggest pain points in these flows, and get an overall sense for how they work versus looking into what they work on.
Questions from staff interviews:
Once you have the data what is your process for pre-processing the data?
What is your process for analyzing the data, what tools do you use? How does this change when it is qualitative data vs quantitative data?
Presentation Phase
Once this information was compiled we were then able to complete our Best Practices Document and our Data Decision Tree. These items are the only deliverables that LeCroy & Milligan were working for, and we wanted to make sure we got the best sense for how they worked, so that is why these were completed last. Beyond the completion of these documents, we presented our main findings to the LeCroy & Milligan staff. From the beginning, LeCroy & Milligan identified the purpose of this project was to provide educational insight into their staff, and this the biggest part of that because we gave their staff a large presentation and gave them the ability to answer questions they may have afterwards.
